..Please note that open string power is governed by the tap tone agreement of the nut and the tailpiece. This is the reason that sometimes the open and fingered strings have different power or tone quality. The nut should be tuned to match the fingerboard so that open and fingered notes have the same power. (Please see web site instructions for this adjustment.) ..If the tailpiece is generally too low in fundamental tap tone, then there are several ways to raise its tap tone: (Note: when the photos show scraping material from the top surface, wood could alternately be scraped from the underside of the tailpiece with the same results, but with less convenience).

..To raise its tap tone, we can either scrape wood from the side of the tailpiece from the waist forward (toward the bridge) or from the top surface of the tailpiece behind the string that needs to be raised from the waist toward the bottom of the instrument (end pin side). See Figure Six.
.. Scraping on the side of the tailpiece from the waist toward the bridge raises the tap tone of the strings on that side while scraping the top surface directly behind a string from the waist toward the end pin raises only that individual string's tap tone.

Scraping this area, directly behind the 'D' string raised only the tap tone of the 'D' string on the tailpiece.

Scraping on side (in area shown) raises both strings on this side.

Please note: Before adjusting the tailpiece, lay protective material underneath (I prefer the heavy manila folder paper) to protect the top plate and varnish from damage.
