Based on testing I had done, I realized that the wood on the outside of a tree is higher toned than wood closer to the center of the tree. ...What I did was purchase fine European spruce sized for cello making and remove the outer wood for making violin plates. This wood is stronger and lighter. I can cut out enough for four violins from the wood intended for only one cello. ...I have used this wood successfully on a number of violins and still have enough well aged 'cello' spruce for several more violins... |
