Opus # 03
...This was the first violin I make beginning with just blocks of wood.
It is the pattern I have used ever since; that is, a 1714 Stradivarius violin that English author David Herrin-Allen measured and published drawings of in his famous book on violin making :" Violin Making as it was, and is" about 1890. He commented that he felt this model violin was especially handsome, and I decided to make it my model for violin making. If you are going to copy someone, it might as well be the finest violin maker.
...I made this violin completely with hand tools in the 'old fashioned way'. It was a good experience and began to give me an appreciation of the craft I was seriously entering.
...It was a reasonable success for a first violin. Over the years it has served me well for testing various acoustical adjustments until eventually it became used up; but has continued useful for templates for my continuing work.
