With a long sanding board, I begin to refine the rough under neck surface after sanding the neck root to the correct radius (as measured from the upper plate edge).

Here I am using a neck section gage, part of a two gage set with eight station profiles (from violin maker Ray Doerr's professional violin making manual) to get neck shape close to the ideal.
