Corvair Flywheel Page....
We specialize in rebuilding Chevrolet Corvair flywheels since 1974. The Chevrolet Corvair flywheel was a special three piece design which was prompted by a noise transmission from the engine and solved by mounting the iron face of the Corvair flywheel and a special spun formed disc which connected it to the Corvair crankshaft.
This unique design for the Corvair flywheel meant that the seperate parts had to be mechanically joined. Chevrolet chose to rivet the parts together with (12) mild steel rivets. Unfortunately, over time, a slot becomes cut in the side of the Corvair flywheel rivets and the clutch assembly moves off center causing vibration and poor operation. I rebuild the Chevrolet Corvair flywheel using high strength bolts, carefully centering the parts and providing an excellent resurface after first heat treating the iron face to remove stress and hard spots.
. I also remachine both sides of the iron plate to remove casting warping which is very common.
Since 1974, I have rebuilt over 5,850 Corvair Flywheels. I think they are the best availble with several features superior to the factory stock flywheel:
  • We bolt-circle center the iron face on re-assembly so that your pressure plate runs true. The factory machined the six bolts that mount the pressure plate to the flywheel on an accruate circle but this circle is off center and average of 0.0065" so that the typical Corvair flywheel has about 0.013" edge runout.
. You can hear this for your self when a Corvair engine starts, the starter noise is uneven as the ring gear to starter pinion mesh changes because of this bolt circle runout. With the Dale flywheel, the flywheel centers the pressure plate accurately.
  • While apart, I heat treat the iron face to transform any hard spots back into gray cast iron, then remachine the clutch disc surface( and the 1/8" step on late model flywheels), then machine true the back iron surface (that contacts the flywheel spring center), and machine (counter-bore surface) for fitting the new high strength premium quality bolts.
  • Please view slide show for more details, suffice it to say that this flywheel will give you long faithful service and is unsurpassed in quality workmanship. Lifetime quarantee that the bolts will never fail in service.

Quantity discounts:-5% for 2,-7 1/2% for three and -10% for four or more in the same order.Note: no space for the text!
... These are examples of the stock '60-63 (short) and '64-69 (long) failed rivets. Notice how the metal is cut out of just one side. This extra space then allows the iron flywheel face and pressure plate to shift around creating an out off balance situation. The missing metal is pounded between the flywheel parts so it may still sound tight when tapped with a wood block!
